Macallan Distillery in Speyside nominated for Best Building

Macallan distillery is nominated among the finalists of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2019 as Best New Building in the United Kingdom.

The criteria taken into account to qualify are: design vision; innovation and originality; ability to stimulate, engage and amaze occupants and visitors; accessibility and sustainability; how fit the building is for its purpose and the level of satisfaction of its customers.

But a unique feature of the distillery, such as the sliding roof, convinced the judges in their selection. For them it is a representation of the surrounding hills and is an ingenious fusion of architecture, whisky technology and striking interior that express the legacy of the Macallan brand.

The distillery was designed by Roger Stirck Harbours + Partners and built by Robertson Group. In addition, it will be competing alongside a rural opera house and a cork experimental house.
