Let’s discover the spectacular design of Bar Americano, located in Brooklyn, inspired by the famous aperitivo bars of Spain and Northern Italy.

Space Exploration Design, worked to give Brooklyn’s Bar Americano a worn feel.

Using elements such as aged plaster, exposed brick and mahogany woodwork, design agency Space Exploration Design worked in order to “give the impression that it’s always been there“.

It recently opened its doors on the corner of a landmark residential building on Franklin Avenue, a bustling but uncrowded north Brooklyn thoroughfare.

The design’s purpose is to express a worn-in appearance to integrate with the fabric of the neighborhood.

Bar Americano specializes in serving cocktails, appetizers and small plates and is inspired by aperitivo bars like those found in Spain and northern Italy.

Let’s start with the bar, whose bar is located in the center of the space, with a U-shaped counter surrounded by wooden stools on three sides.

Behind, we can see a mahogany cabinet displaying a wide range of liquor bottles, and near the top is a vintage clock.

Let’s read what Kevin Greenberg, designer and studio principal, says:

The directive given to Space Exploration Design by the American Bar’s ownership team was to create a neighborhood bar that gave the impression of having been there forever,”

“[We chose] a palette of mostly warm, neutral materials with natural finishes that will patina gracefully over time.”

Also recessed in the woodwork are a pair of gold sconces decorated with abstract floral motifs by Blaser Finishing, which also did the plastering on the walls.

The front of the bar counter and the lower half of the partitions are clad with louvered panels, and the fluted glass continues the same vertical accentuation at the top.

To emphasize the simple and honest approach to cocktails, Space Exploration employed an understated detailing language throughout the venue.

The strong sense of verticality perfectly complements the American Bar’s delicate glassware,” the studio explains.

To welcome its diners, Bar Americano has accommodated cozy seating nooks with leather upholstery of varying sizes.

They are located in corners and bay windows, away from the standing room.

A larger area, with two-top tables, rises a few steps, leaning against an exposed brick wall.

Decorative tin tiles covering the ceiling were painted matte white, while brass was chosen for light fixtures, coat racks, and other hardware details.
