In the French-speaking world, March beer is the drink that opens the spring season. We show you who makes it and what it is.

Spring is an ideal time to create new things. Nature itself recreates what autumn and winter took away. Brewers become farmers again…

It is a custom that has been celebrated for centuries. To create and distribute in spring a beer called “spring beer” or “march beer”. It is usually fresh and light, and helps to quench thirst. It is a symbol of the new dawn after the long winter period.

After the beer was created and distributed, the staff of the farm breweries went out into the fields. This used to be a way of life that quickly became a symbol and was repeated over the years.

In the 1980s, French breweries decided to recreate the custom. To propose fresh and thirst-quenching beers to highlight the spring. Producing these beers must be something unique and special, so they are produced in limited editions and sold in a certain period.

The strategy allows several breweries to propose then the famous “March beer” or “spring beer” available throughout France.

It is important to highlight certain facts about March beer:

  • In Germany it is usually called Marzen. It is a beer produced in the month of March, with more hops to last months in the cellar during spring and summer. This was a period when production was prohibited.
  • It is said that this beer was produced and consumed by Belgian farmers in past centuries.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
