Where do cocktails come from after the classics? Alex Day and David Kaplan explain it in detail in Cocktail Codex.

The bartenders who co-founded the Death & Co bar, a New York institution located in the East Village, managed to create a simple and expert method to understand the basics of mixology. Many of the cocktails we create today are of course based on a handful of classic cocktails.

The book is very well thought out as it starts from the principle that many classic cocktails are grouped into families or drink groups close to each other. Cocktail Codex takes as its starting point the six classic cocktails that every bartender should master: the Old Fashioned, the Martini, the Daiquiri, the Sidecar, the Highball, and the Flip.

For Day and Kaplan, it is necessary to master and work the formulas of these cocktails, before reinventing these recipes or creating new cocktails. In addition, it is important to keep in mind the following key elements: base, balance and seasoning.

All this is methodically explained in the 300 pages of Cocktail Codex. A didactic and entertaining book considered by many to be one of the best of 2020.
