What is the secret to the best Old Fashioned? Besides bourbon, sugar, and bitters, there’s one other ingredient that will make your Old Fashioned the best it can be: ice! Since a single large ice cube has less surface area than a large number of small cubes, the ice will melt more slowly, preventing your drink from getting watered down too quickly. To finish the drink, we can add a maraschino cherry and orange zest, but feel free to omit them if you’re a purist.

Old Fashioned

Ingredients:

  • 1 cube of demerara sugar
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 large ice cube
  • 2 oz of bourbon
  • Orange peel and maraschino cherry to serve

Preparation:

  1. In a rocks glass, stir together the demerara sugar, water and bitters until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add an ice cube and pour the bourbon over it.
  3. Stir until cool.
  4. Garnish with an orange peel and a maraschino cherry.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
