Today, May 13, is World Cocktail Day! We propose these classic and easy to prepare at home recipes to celebrate it.

What is World Cocktail Day and why do we celebrate this day?

This day celebrates the occasion when this term was coined for the drink that, tipically, contains more than 3 ingredients. This practice of mixing different alcohols exists since 1600. However, it was not until a century later that the popularity of this type of mixed drink grew. Thanks to the emergence of sweet drinks or syrups to become powerful citrus blends. Today, we mix alcohols, liquors, spirits, mixers, sodas. And even fruits and vegetables in our cocktails to make them delicious works of art.

The term was defined by Harry Crosswell. On May 13, 1806, Crosswell, the editor of a specialized publication, gave an accurate definition of what a cocktail was. And the answer prompted a world day of these preparations.

Crosswell defined “a stimulating liquor composed of a distillate of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.” Crosswell also ushered in an era of cocktail making by his term and the use of ingredients.
