Celebrate the arrival of spring ahead by making a blood orange gin and sipping it in a Martini.
The unmistakable raspberry flavor of blood oranges is not due to their color; varieties range from a barely blushed red to a deep ruby red, but their sweet, refreshing taste remains the same.
Try them in a homemade gin and tonic or in a Martini for a different kind of cocktail.
Blood Orange Gin
Ingredients
8 fresh, ripe blood oranges
750ml of gin (we recommend using your favorite as a base)
A sterilized decanter
55g of sugar
Method
Cut the blood oranges into slices. Pour 750ml of gin into a sterilized carafe and add 55g of sugar. Stir well.
Add the blood oranges piece by piece, making sure the gin covers all the pieces. Don’t overfill the jar, you don’t want to waste any.
For a touch of citrus, take another blood orange and squeeze its juice into the jar.
Now comes the hard part: you have to wait for the gin to infuse the flavor of the orange. This will take about two weeks and you will need to stir the gin every day.
When it’s ready, the blood orange gin will have turned an orange color and smell like freshly sliced fruit. Remove the slices and strain the gin twice.
Pour it into a bottle and it’s ready to be served.
