17 000 hectares of vineyard damaged by hailstorm in Bordeaux and Cognac

A violent hailstorm struck 10,000 hectares of vineyards in Cognac last Saturday, more specifically in Charente-Cognac and around 7100 in Bordeaux.

Europe 1 reported following a press release issued on Monday by the Bordeaux Interprofessional Wine Council (CIVB).

In figures, only 4 to 5% of Bordeaux’s vineyards were affected, unlike last year’s episode where 40 to 80% of vineyards were affected by hail. As a result, 500 winegrowers saw their hectares destroyed by 80% and another part partially.

Measures to safeguard vineyards

The National Interprofessional Office for Cognac (BNIC) reported that in the region 3 500 hectares were severely affected, i.e. more than 80 % of destruction. An emergency unit will be set up in the vineyards affected and for winegrowers facing difficulties to propose measures and safeguard the activities of professionals.
