Coca-Cola joins Paboco’s client portfolio to develop a 100% paper bottle. Read more here.
Coca-Cola recently posted a video on YouTube presenting their first prototype for a 100% paper bottle. “Our vision is to create a paper bottle that can be recycled like any other type of paper. This prototype is the first step in achieving this. Says Stijn Franssen, Director of Packaging Innovation at Coca-Cola EMEA.
In the video “Introducing our first Paper Bottle Prototype” Coca-Cola shows that they are working to create a bottle made of 100% paper. An innovative packaging technology that can help us achieve a Waste-Free World. Through the video it is possible to enter the laboratory to see the progress of this project.
The first generation prototype is made of a paper shell with a closure and inner lining made of 100% recycled plastic. According to Franssen, the next step is to create a paper bottle without the plastic inner lining.
Franssen’s team is conducting extensive laboratory tests at The Coca-Cola Company’s research and development center in Brussels. They will evaluate how the paper bottle behaves, holds and protects its contents while refrigerated and in other scenarios.
For Coca-Cola, developing a paper bottle supports its “World Without Waste” packaging goal. This consists of collecting and developing one bottle or can for each one sold by 2030. This would substantially reduce the use of virgin packaging materials. The purpose is to do this by using only 100% recyclable packaging materials.
Paboco
Carried out in conjunction with Paboco, The Paper Bottle Company, the project according to Michael Michelsen, director of business development at Paboco, “is still in the early stages of development”. He added, “The paper bottle concept is still a work in progress, and to be able to truly evolve. Scaling up to meet producer and consumer demand is one of the critical challenges to be overcome.
Launched in 2019, Paboco is a joint venture between paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla. Created from start-up and innovation expert EcoXpac. Paboco announced last year that it was working with Carlsberg to develop two prototypes of eco-friendly bottles made from wood fiber.
