The French Government announced a series of new measures to counter the coronavirus surge, among which the closure of cafés and bars.

Starting this Tuesday cafés and bars in Paris and its surrounding suburbs will remain close for at least 15 days. The new restriction kicks in after a coronavirus upsurge reported more than 12 000 new daily cases. Bars and cafés serving food were already asked to close at 10:00 pm.

However, restaurants will remain open in Paris and everywhere in France, following a strict safety protocole to avoid spreading the virus.  In Marseille, restaurants reopened after having closed for seven days one week ago.

In Paris and its suburbs, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val de Marne and Hauts-de-Seine, Covid-19 status rose from “reinforced” to “Maximum Alert” area.

As early as Sunday evening, questioned by the AFP, the Union of Hotel Trades and Industries (Umih) said it was “extremely alarmed” by this new blow for a sector already hard hit by the health crisis.

The government is indeed following the opinion of the High Council of Public Health which validated on Sunday the reinforced sanitary protocol proposed by the professionals of the sector and which will be applicable in the maximum alert zones as well as in the reinforced alert zones.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and the Prefect of Police, Didier Lallement, will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. at which they will detail the measures taken by decree which will apply for at least fifteen days in the capital and the three departments of the inner suburbs.
