Hong Kong and the city of California are both taking steps to close bars and restaurants in the face of outbreaks of Covid-19.

California

In California, Governor Gavin Newsom announced on July 13 live television the immediate closure of operations inside bars and restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms. In addition, zoos, museums, entertainment centers and movie theaters in all counties.

The bars will also have to cease their activities outside the business.

Daily cases of Covid-19 in California reached 8,211, about 500 cases more than the previous week (7,878 per day). To date, 355,000 cases have been confirmed in the state.

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong government ordered a suspension of service inside restaurants between 6pm and 5am. In fact, new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed and on July 14th they registered 52 new cases of which 41 infections were local. Thus, for fear of a violent resurgence of the virus, Hong Kong decided to reinforce the distancing measures. Many of the new cases are restaurant-related, so the new measures are aimed at restaurants, said Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive.

This is the first time they have made this decision in restaurants. Bars and pubs will also be closed at the same time. Other types of venues will also have to follow this new rule, such as gyms, karaoke lounges and amusement parks. The measures took effect yesterday, July 15.

Suntory develops a mask adapted to nightlife

On the other hand, the Japanese beverage group Suntory, is developing a mask adapted for nightlife. The group is exploring the possibility with a group of employees creating prototypes to cover our face without ruining our night outings!

The project comes as a result of the new wave of Covid-19 cases in Japan confirmed in recent weeks.

Suntory is then developing “shields” that can be used in Japanese Izakaya bars and they already have different ideas. According to the Financial Times they vary in appearance, from an astronaut’s helmet to a sun visor. The group is still deciding on the final design although they have already tested some prototypes.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
