Covid-19: new restrictions apply to bars and restaurants in Germany

Germany is implementing new measures to counteract the rise in cases of Covid-19 through the closure of bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Wednesday new restrictions against the accelerated progression of Covid-19 cases. As a result, the gastronomy, culture and leisure sectors will be closed for a month.

The measures will take effect on Monday, November 2 and will last until the end of the month. Private meetings between people from two different households are also limited to 10 people.

How to cushion the economic shock

Germany will donate up to 10 billion euros in aid to the sectors affected by the new measures.

Merkel acknowledged that these were “strict” and “painful” measures. She also noted that at the current rate of new infections, it was likely that “the limits of the health care system” would be reached.

The virus, called covid-19 by the World Health Organization, has infected more than 42 million people worldwide. The number of deaths now exceeds one million. Germany has reported more than 400,000 cases of covid-19 and has a death toll of just over 10,000 people.
