The competition for very rare, old and very high value whisky bottles is increasing.
According to a report by Rare Whisky 101 from September 2019, the value of collectible single malt Scotch whisky bottles sold reached a record high of £25.8 million. In the last six months of 2019 alone. This equates to an increase of 58 per cent compared to the same period last year. Volume increased by 43.9% in the first half of the year.
The most sought-after bottles, known as ultra-rare and very high value, are Black Bowmore; Gold Bowmore; old vintages and related, as they are hard to come by. Until three years ago, there had never been such a large sale of whisky as that of the Macallan 1926 bottle, hand painted by the artist Michael Dillon. This bottle reached a value of £1.2 million, when in 2016 the most expensive bottle reached £100,000.
The most sought-after bottles also include Japanese whisky. Last year, a large collection of whisky from Japan was also auctioned. The Hanyo Ichiro Full Card Collection reached the price of $917,000.
Nowadays, buying whisky bottles becomes a safe investment, rather than a collector’s item. Buying and selling high-value whisky bottles is a long-term project, as the people who buy them do not usually sell immediately.
