The end of summer is approaching for many (although it will start soon for others!), and we recommend digestives and drinks for dinner, what to drink before and after.
The experts awarded by the Restaurant Awards recommend us through Wine Spectator, the best digestives and drinks to taste before and after the summer dinners.
Among wines, beers and limoncello, among others, we suggest a few digestives and drinks to accompany dinner during the last hot days we have left, or to take note for next summer.
Digestifs and drinks preferred by experts
Will Jones – wine director at The Hope Farm
Mata Bianco Vermouth from Spain, dry white sparkling wine and a twist of lemon, ice. A kind of spritz for summer.
Amanda Abbott – wine director at the Oyster Bar
A shot or two of limoncello in a tall glass over ice, with club soda and squeeze of a nice fresh lemon.
Mark Cartland – wine director Island Vintage Wine Bar
Porto Tonic: one part white Porto, two parts chilled tonic, a quart of orange and a pinch of mint. Served over ice in a highball glass. A perfect balance of sweet, bitter, sour and herbal.
Steven McDonald – wine director at Pappas Bros Steakhouse
Classic Aperol spritz, or half Aperol half Campari. Or more exotic versions with red vermouth from Napa Valley or Caperitif from South Africa.

For after dinner: Champagne and craft beer. The effervescence cleanses the palate, refreshes and energizes.
Jaime Pinedo – wine director at Spruce
A Picnic Collis: a combination of 2 parts gin or vodka; 1 part bitters such as Aperol or Campari; 1 part citrus, such as lemon or grapefruit juice and bubbles to top it off: Prosecco, ginger ale or soda water.
Jody Davis – wine director at Aretsky’s Patroon
A Marenco Brachetto d’Acqui Pineto 2020 from Piedmont. Slightly sweet and aromatic with low alcohol. Perfect as an aperitif or after dinner. I even serve it as a complement to yuzu sorbet as a palate cleanser.
