Last year, fans in the United Kingdom spent an unprecedented amount of money on a rare single malt whisky at auction.

The report, recently published by industry analyst Rare Whiskey 101, states that in 2018, for the first time in its history, the British elite elixir auction market sold more than 100,000 bottles of whisky, bringing in a record $52 million, a 63% increase over 2017.

The number of bottles of single malt Scotch sold at auction in the United Kingdom increased by nearly 30%, from 83,713 in 2017 to 107,890. The average price per bottle also increased by nearly 30% compared to the previous year to reach a record high of $486.

In 2018, a new world record was also achieved. Indeed, when the 1926 Macallan (60 years old) was put up for sale, it raised $1,528,800 at Christie’s auction in London. That’s still the largest amount ever paid for a single bottle of scotch!

“As consumption continues to increase, driven by connoisseurs, collectors and investors, stocks of rare whisky will continue to decline, creating the ideal conditions for soaring prices,” said David Robertson, co-founder of Rare Whiskey 101.
