Molson Coors Beverage Company announced on January 7 that it will cease production at the Irwindale, California brewery by September 2020. In addition, they reached an agreement with Pabst Brewing Co. that allows them an option to purchase at the Irwindale site.

The aim of the production shutdown in Irwindale is to optimize the brewery’s footprint. “This decision will allow us to optimize the footprint of our brewery. While streamlining our operations for greater efficiency across our entire network“. Says Brian Erhardt, head of integrated supply chain. “Although it was a difficult decision, our system benefits from additional capabilities. And Irwindale’s production can be absorbed by other breweries in our network.”

Molson Coors’ announcement comes as part of a plan announced by the company to revitalize and restructure. In addition to helping the company get back on track. However, shutting down production in Irwindale is not part of the broader revitalization plan announced in October 2019. Moreover, this decision will not affect the savings previously announced. The beers currently produced in Irwindale will transfer to other breweries over the next nine months. Mainly Golden in Colorado and Fort Worth in Texas.

The Irwindale brewery employs about 470 people and produced 4.8 million barrels in 2019 which were delivered to 261 independent distributors. The contents of these barrels include beers such as Miller Lite, Coors Light, Miller High, MGD, Steel Reserve, Miller 64 and other brands for Pabst.

The official statement of Molson Coors is available in Business Insider’s website.
