This hot Irish Coffee cocktail requires a good whisky. We recommend four whiskies to make your best recipe.

Small Batch Irish Whiskey

Small-batch Irish Whiskeys adapt very well to Irish coffee since in its aromatic profile we find a creamy, spicy, and rich flavor. Its notes range from saltiness to citrus, something that elevates the taste and aroma of coffee and also combines very well with the cream of the cocktail.

Whiskey aged in Caribbean Rum Cask

Whiskey aged in Caribbean rum casks stands out with thanks to its aging in rum barrels giving a whisky with a sweet, rum-roasted flavor.

Premium Irish Poitín

If you’re not familiar with the poitin, it’s the Irish version of moonshine. It’s a white barley-based spirit distilled in copper stills. Some people prefer to use poitin for their Irish coffee. For example, at Bar 1661, they prepare a variation of the Irish coffee recipe with Premium Irish Poitín brands. This recipe is the Belfast Coffee. A cold version prepared with local coffee, sugar, and poitín, with Irish cream and grated nutmeg.

Original Irish Whiskey

In New York, the famous bar The Dead Rabbit, prepares Irish coffee with original Irish whiskey. In fact, Irish coffee is The Dead Rabbit’s flagship drink. For Jack McGarry, founder of the bar, the original Irish whiskey recipe has the highest bean content in the blend, making Irish coffee lighter.

Irish Coffee Recipe

Ingredients

120ml of coffee, preferably strong and rich, freshly brewed and hot

45ml Irish whiskey

2 teaspoons of brown sugar

30ml of cream

Preparation

Add the sugar in a dedicated Irish coffee cup. Then add the coffee and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the Irish whiskey and stir again. Finally, add the cream so that it floats. This is done by pouring the cream over an upside-down spoon on the glass. There, do not mix the preparation and let the cream mix itself and float with the coffee.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
