The star bartender of the bar Kumiko is pushing for the legalization of home cocktails and take-out during the coronavirus.
After the closure of many bars around the world, these establishments are forced to work behind the scenes. By creating take-away or home-made cocktails. In Chicago, Illinois, things are different. This way of work cannot unfortunately happen. That’s why bartender Julia Momose of Kumiko is looking for a way to make this legal. Her bar is one of those that cannot practice such activity.
To that end, a petition was created urging Governor Pritzker to allow Illinois bars and restaurants to serve cocktails to take away or for home delivery. This will help affected establishments during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). However, they can sell cocktail preparation kits, which provide ingredients and alcohol to create the drink at home.
“We need the state of Illinois to allow licensed bars and restaurants on site to sell their meticulously crafted cocktails as a way to increase their revenues during these challenging times.” So says the petition created by Julia Momose. At the time of its publication the petition has already collected almost 1000 signatures.
Momose says a change in the law will make things better for her and her team. “The margin is better in mixed drinks. Many small bars don’t have enough inventory on hand right now to sell whole bottles of alcohol, or enough mixers to make it worthwhile without spending more money.” Momose wrote to Eater Chicago.
