The Fat Pelican is a landmark of Carolina Beach. A special and important place for the community and the world of bars. It has been rated one of the top 25 Dive Bars in the country by the Huffington Post. And in its state, ranked number one.

As for many bars in the world, the Fat Pelican has also been affected by the crisis caused by covid-19. Owner Danny McLaughlin revealed that they were on the verge of closing down.

McLaughlin’s son created a GoFundMe account to raise money for the bar. The community was very generous and overnight they were able to raise over $13,000 to keep the bar’s legacy alive.

McLaughlin said he had to stop the fundraising. “I had to stop it. I don’t need more than I need. People donated very quickly. Mostly between $20 and $25 per person but also $200 and even $400. This just shows how many people wanted to help.”

This money will help McLaughlin pay for two bar staff and utilities.
