cooper king destilería - distillery - distillerie

The Yorkshire-based English distillery contributes to planet earth with every bottle sold of its two gin.

Drinking good spirits shouldn’t cost the earth,” say co-founders Chris Jaume and Dr Abbie Neilson of Cooper King Distillery.

To contribute to planet earth, they have reinforced their sustainable commitment by creating each bottle of Dry and herbal gin, which removes more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted.

For every bottle of Cooper King herb or Dry Gin, customers contribute to the removal of 1kg of CO2e from the atmosphere.

In addition to removing carbon, each bottle of gin helps to plant one square meter of native UK broadleaf woodland. This action is part of the firm’s charitable partnership with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

A Distillery Committed to the Environment

As part of Cooper King’s commitment to long-term sustainability, the team recently planted 30 juniper bushes on the premises.

Once mature, they could produce enough juniper for about 15,000 bottles of gin per year. Although it takes eight to 10 years for the female plants to produce their first crop of juniper berries ready for distillation.

Importantly, it also ships all orders in plastic-free packaging thanks to an ingenious origami-style recycled cardboard box developed with a local box manufacturer. This saves 26 tons of fresh water per year thanks to the use of innovative vacuum gin stills.

The company has also signed the United Nations Climate Neutrality Commitment. It was the first distillery in Europe to join the 1% for the Planet environmental initiative.

About the Cooper King Distillery

The distillery is founded in 2016 with Dr Abbie Nielson, a former scientist and Chris Jaume, a chartered architect. Cooper King Distillery is a whisky and gin distillery located near the city of York, they are independent and collectively funded.

According to Yorkshire Live, co-founder Chris Jaume said, “Producing sustainable, flavor-based drinks has always been at the heart of what we do, because we believe that drinking good spirits doesn’t have to cost the Earth.”

After a year of hard work, and despite a pandemic, we are delighted to have made our two main products carbon-negative.”

He added: “Reaching this milestone is an important step in our plan to become a carbon-negative distillery.”

We value people, planet and prosperity, and by sharing our results in our publicly available carbon report, we hope to inspire others to make a positive difference.
