We discover who is credited with creating this tropical and Caribbean rum-based cocktail.

Born around the 19th century, the creation of the Daiquiri is attributed to Jennings Stockton Cox, an American engineer. The cocktail, closely related to the Canchanchara, also finds its origins in Cuba.

During his stay on the island, Cox and his team worked in the Sierra Maestra mountains, on Cuba’s southeastern coast. That is where the small town of Daiquiri is located. Back then, around 1898, Cox created the classic drink when he ran out of gin while hosting guests from the United States. At that moment, he thought it appropriate to mix lime, sugar and the only alcohol he had on hand: rum.

It is said to have arrived in the United States about ten years later, when a U.S. Navy medical officer brought the recipe from Cuba to Washington D.C.

Since then the Daiquiri has been recreated in various versions. We find the Santa Marta Daiquiri, Pineapple Daiquiri, Banana Daiquiri, Hemingway Daiquiri, Santiago Daiquiri, Elixir Daiquiri, Aged Honey Daiquiri, and even Strawberry Daiquiri.

Which one is your favorite? Here is a recipe for a classic Daiquiri.
