Interview with Bruno Santos, IBA Secretary

1. What is the IBA and its Purpose?

The International Bartenders Association is a worldwide non-profit authority in the professional bartending industry. Our mission is to engage and educate bartenders all over the world to a high professional standard so that they can showcase their skills, creativity and promote good drinking habits.

With the creation of our Bartender’s Community we enabled our members to exchange experiences, news, trends, ideas of mixology and drinking culture.
Since our establishment our main purpose has been to promote and represent the best bartenders in the world.

Also, by developing training programs we made the art & craft of bartending accessible to everyone by the standardizations of mixing drinks & cocktails.

Furthermore, IBA helped brands increase their worldwide awareness among the bartender community, expand their reach and visibility in the on-trade. In return, bartenders throughout the world have used our Associate Members brands to create amazing cocktails.

This brand engagement has led many bartenders to become the best ambassadors to give global reach to many smaller industry players.

2. In how many countries is the IBA present?

The IBA was founded at a historic conference held in the saloon of the Grand Hotel, Torquay, England, on the 24th of February 1951. This date is still celebrated today by bartender’s around the world as the “International Bartenders Day”. Currently the International Bartenders Association consists of bartender guilds from 62 countries. Thanks to steady interest from around the globe, the IBA continues to grow.

3. How do you help bartenders around the world? -besides helping Spirits Hunters for the competition!

For the IBA, strength lies in the wealth of professional experience of tens of thousands of bartenders internationally, by the establishment of Bar Cultures for Guilds and New Economies we were able to encourage commercial initiatives to benefit how individuals run their businesses with the objective of maintaining the highest level of service and assistance in raising professional certified qualifications for bartenders.

As reference IBA created the first ever bartender’s competition in 1955 (7-8 October) Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since then we have been organizing events worldwide yearly to promote and acknowledge all passionate bar professionals.
