The big comeback of blue cocktails

To participate in the West 2019 Giffard Cup (Asia-Pacific region), bartenders must make a blue cocktail.

Nowadays, the most famous are :
Blue Hawaii: pineapple juice, blue curacao liqueur, coconut and rum cream or vodka,
Turquoise blue: white rum, blue Curacao, pineapple juice, sweet and sour mixture,
The Blue Lagoon: Vodka, Blue Curaçao, Lemonade

The common ingredient you all know is Curaçao, a spirit made from the dried orange peels of laraha, a bitter citrus fruit from the Caribbean country. It is best known with the blue dye, but it is also available in green, orange, red or natural without a dye. In Malaysia, bartenders also use bunga telang or pea butterfly flower, an ingredient used to tint cocktails, just in contact with an acidic ingredient such as lemon.

According to Timothy Jason, manager of Giffard Asia, blue drinks are less consumed for their lack of naturalness: “When you order a red strawberry drink, you don’t question it, because red is a natural colour for a strawberry. But the electric blue color of Blue Curaçao may seem a little unnatural,” he said, before ensuring that the blue color of Giffard Blue Curacao liqueur is made from natural ingredients and is safe for consumption.

He hopes that the Giffard West Cup will help to restore value to Curacao !

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
