Key players like Uber, Tesla, and Waymo are already rolling out fleets of autonomous vehicles in major cities. Barclays projects a 10% to 15% annual growth in demand for these services over the next decade, with Waymo aiming to have thousands of vehicles operational by 2026.

Governments are likely to welcome these services, as they have the potential to reduce drunk driving incidents. In 2021, approximately 11,654 fatalities resulted from crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for about 30% of all traffic deaths in the U.S. By providing a safe alternative for those who have been drinking, robotaxis could significantly reduce drunk driving incidents.

Historical evidence suggests that ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft have already contributed to a decline in drunk driving incidents in various cities. If robotaxis could reduce alcohol-related fatalities by 10% to 20%, it could save between 1,165 to 2,400 lives annually.

While precise numbers are difficult to ascertain, the introduction of robotaxis has the potential to save hundreds to thousands of lives each year by reducing alcohol-related fatalities. This shift could reflect a broader cultural movement towards safer transportation options and responsible drinking habits, making socializing over drinks less dangerous than ever before.
