The year 2020 was full of auctions and special launches that considerably increased the value of whisky. Discover six of the most expensive ones.

Find below in descending order six of the most expensive whisky bottles in the world in 2020. Many names will no doubt be familiar to you, from great Scottish whiskies to famous Japanese ones.

 

6. Macallan “M” Imperiale in 6 liter Lalique Decanter

Price: 421,900 euros €

Officially the most expensive whisky of 2015, it remains one of the most expensive in the world today. In January 2014 it was auctioned in Hong Kong for $628,000.

For the whiskies in this special range, Macallan mixed natural color and oak casks that had previously contained sherry. As it moves through the range, the whisky becomes increasingly complex.

 

5. Macallan 30 YO Sherry Hogshead

Price: 374,155 €

Not just bottles. The barrels are also auctioned for their precious content that has never been bottled. In this case, we find a 30-year-old sherry barrel of Hogshead category, that is, with a capacity of 250 liters. Inside, a Macallan whisky distilled in 1989, and it is believed that at the time it was one of the oldest barrels of The Macallan available on the market.

 

4. Yamazaki 55 years old

Price: 644,640 €

This bottle of whisky from the Japanese distillery Yamazaki is produced by Suntory.

Yamazaki whisky 55 years old is a very special item among collectors as only 100 bottles were produced in this edition. It was distilled in the 1960s and matured in a Japanese mizunara oak barrel in 1960 and its precious liquid was transferred to a white oak barrel in 1964.

On August 21, it was sold at a Bonhams auction for HK$6.2 million, or $795,000.

 

3. The Macallan Lalique Legacy Collection

Price: 833 146 €

This collection of Macallan whisky has one thing in common: all the bottles have glass from the famous French glassworks Lalique. In April 2017, six bottles from the Macallan collection were auctioned in Lalique Legacy Collection. The decanters contained Macallan single malt whisky of the rarest kind from 50 to 65 years old.

 

2. Hanyu Ichiro Full Card Series

Price: 1,224,472 €

In November 2020, Bonhams Hong Kong auctioned a collection of the “Full Card” series of Japanese whisky Hanyu Ichiru. This range of whiskies formed part of the sale of Bonhams Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky held in Hong Kong on 20 and 21 November.

The Full Card series contains 54 bottles. In this collection the whisky contained in the bottles comes from a single barrel dating from 1985 to 2014. The Hanyu Ichiro series breaks a new record sold at 1.5 MM$, 1,224,472 euros.

 

1. Macallan 1926 60 years Fine and Rare

Price: 1,660,817 €

A 60-year-old bottle of Macallan was auctioned in October 2019. Decorated with the distillery’s label, “Fine and Rare”, it broke a new world record after selling for 1,660,817 euros (1.5 million pounds sterling) at Sotheby’s London auction.
