New York, confinement and cocktails at home

What’s the New Yorker doing in solitary? Cocktails at home? Suspended, the city takes a new turn to find the fun-at-home.

New York, mobilized daily by its 2.5 million inhabitants, confinement brings a new twist. In suspense, the city that never sleeps. New York, with its endless bars and restaurants, is forced to change its strategy. At the same time, its inhabitants, who enjoy every corner and the great variety of venues in the city every day, see a new opportunity to stay afloat in their homes.

On March, the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut limited all restaurants and bars to take-out and delivery as part of the effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. But the New York State Liquor Authority launched a small lifeline to some of those businesses in the form of “new off-site privileges. This is known as take-out drinks.

While the bottles of alcohol in their home bars play their part, with new ways to approach cocktail making at home, the pleasure of a fine cocktail is just a phone call away. Or an app away.

New York Bars

Some of these Manhattan bars are Dante, PDT, Attaboy, Middle Branch, Sugar Monk, Angel’s Share. In Brooklyn, they have Hunky Dory, Leyenda, Seaborne, Donna, Fresh Kills, Fort Defiance. And finally in Queens, Dutch Kill’s and Selma’s Bar.

Several bars reported making 200 cocktails a day. But don’t wait to get an Old Fashioned in your fancy rock glass… No. Bars make use of all kinds of containers: the famous Ball jars or take-away coffee cups. And even glass bottles with plates. But in each delivery, hygiene rules predominate, with gloves, social distance and mouthpieces complementing the transfer.

And as Claire Sprouse, one of the owners of Hunky Dory, says, “Every cocktail helps right now”.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
