Tequila, the star of confinement shopping: sales up 175 %
Confined, many of us do our shopping online. In England, they report which items have sold best during confinement: tequila!
Tequila is one of the most purchased products online while people are confined to their homes. Since the bars and pubs closed due to the covid-19 pandemic, many did not hesitate to bring the bar home.
According to Waitrose, tequila sales increased by more than 175 % between March 24 and the end of April.
John Vine, a regular buyer of spirits at a supermarket chain, confirms this. “People are buying rather unusual ingredients like tequila or triple sec to make the perfect drink at home.”
Overall, alcohol sales in supermarkets and convenience stores increased 27% in four weeks to April 19, according to consumption analyst Kantar.
However, there is a small concern as normal as it may seem. Elaine Hindal, executive director of Drinkaware, a responsible drinking organization, says the increase in alcohol consumption during confinement “is not surprising”. But “having alcohol in the home for many people can be a temptation and lead to drinking without thinking,” she said.
Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
