The coronavirus crisis caused a decrease in beer consumption in the Netherlands

The beer industry in the Netherlands suffered the consequences of covid-19 as it saw its beer consumption decrease. Read more here.

Although beer sales increased in supermarkets and liquor stores this was not enough to compensate for the closure of bars and restaurants. NLTIMES.NL reports that brewers’ sales in March were down 36%. Then in April by 32 % and finally by 7 % in May. Exports fell by 40 % in May, according to the NOS.

As all over the world, Dutch brewers are gradually resuming production, which has been reduced in recent months.

Another factor that has impacted the brewing sector is the discontinuation of guided tours such as the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam and the Hertong Jan Brewery in Arcen. But the latter are starting to offer these experiences to visitors again as of July. However, they will only be able to welcome 144 visitors a day instead of 400 or 500. A mandatory move to keep the social distancing between people reasonable because of covid-19. “But we are happy to be able to welcome guests again three months later,” said brewer Gerard van den Broek.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
