Today is World Whisky Day! Celebrate with these whisky-based cocktails

World Whisky Day 2020 is celebrated on Saturday 16 May. Since bars all over the world are closed, here are some whisky cocktail recipes to celebrate at home.

Like every year, World Whisky Day is celebrated all over the world, with events around this spirit. Bars, distilleries, restaurants participate in this day with special activities and events. Unfortunately, this year due to coronavirus pandemic celebrating this day in bars, distilleries and restaurants is off.

The Official World Whisky Day website posted a message about this situation encouraging people to raise a glass despite the current events:

To the seasoned specialists, to the eager newcomers.
[To the] single malt purists, to the DIY mixologists.
[To the] distillers, bottlers, retailers and everyone in between.
World Whisky Day has come once more.

We’ve been celebrating on the third Saturday in May for 9 years now.
It’s become a landmark on the whisky calendar.
But things are different this year.

There will be no big parties, no mass tastings.
No sessions in the pub to debate your blends from your single casks, your Highlands from your Lowlands, your bourbon from your rye.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy our favourite tipple.
We all still love whisky, wherever we may be.

Strange, unprecedented, uncertain – however you describe them, these times are far from normal.
Enjoying life’s simple pleasures can keep our spirits up.
So this year, we are celebrating those who are making a difference.

To the medical workers, saving lives on the frontline.
You deserve a dram.
To the care home staff, looking after the most vulnerable.
You deserve a dram.
To the supermarket shelf stackers, food bank volunteers, delivery drivers, and essential workers.
You deserve a dram.
To those balancing childcare with a 9-to-5, and all the rest of us, just getting by.
You deserve a dram.

So go on, raise a glass on Saturday 16 May and let us know how you’re celebrating.
And once we’re back up and running, get out there and support your favourite pubs, bars and restaurants…however you like your whisky.

Cheers and slàinte,
World Whisky Day
