World’s Oldest Scotch Whisky to be Auctioned in October
Sotheby’s has announced the auction of what is said to be the world’s oldest Scotch whisky.
It is a bottle of The Glenlivet, bottled from the world’s oldest Scotch whisky, an 80-year-old Gordon & MacPhail single malt Scotch from the historic Glenlivet distillery based in Moray, Scotland.
Gordon & MacPhail, according to Sotheby’s, has been distilling Scotch whisky since 1940. A portion of the spirit was poured into a custom decanter designed by Sir David Adjaye, OBE – a multi-award winning Ghanaian-British architect.
The decanter includes an oak case, which is a tribute to the oak cask that held the whiskey for decades.

“When I collaborate, I look for like-minded partners in terms of their craft, beliefs and traditions,” Adjaye told Sotheby’s, in a statement. He continued, “I loved Gordon & MacPhail’s rigor and obsession with their products and their craft, a romantic commitment that allows them to do exceptional things.”
According to Sotheby’s the scotch was distilled on February 3, 1940 and bottled on February 5, 2020, making it the oldest Scotch whisky in the world.
The Sotheby’s auction will take place on October 7 at the Hong Kong Wine and Spirits Sales. Sotheby’s currently estimates the decanter to be worth between US$100,000 and US$200,000.
The buyer of the world’s oldest Scotch whisky will also have the opportunity to attend a whisky tasting for four in London. In addition, he or she will get a framed cask head of the oak cask that contained the historic whisky (cask 340), and a signed lithograph of Adjaye’s original drawings for the decanter.
