We continue our journey through the Groult generations, the family of producers of Groult Calvados. Groult represents an exciting journey that is expressed today in the authenticity and unique quality of its eaux-de-vie.

In the Groult family, each generation has marked its passage with an ageing cellar. Today, they are the most beautiful ageing cellars of calvados in the Pays d’Auge. Jean-Roger Groult intends to build his own, while maintaining those of his ancestors. Today for our second part, Léon Groult is in the spotlight according to our interview with Jean-Roger Groult.

At that time, cider factories began to develop strongly in the surrounding area. Transport is increasing (boats and railways), so the proximity to Paris allows an increase in tourism in Normandy and therefore a strong growth in the demand for calvados in the region.

Léon followed the trend and decided to increase production by buying a new still and also building his own cellar. But Léon, is part of the “unfortunate generation”, confides Jean-Roger Groult, currently at the helm of the company. Then he adds “Léon dies at home, 5 years later at 49 years old, indeed because of the gas in the trenches, he unfortunately did not have time to reap the benefits of his work such as marketing“.

His calvados nevertheless made it possible to create the basis of the cuvée named Le Vénérable (calvados from Roger Groult’s time, completed by calvados over 18 years old), the signature of the house, fruity and spicy, which offers an explosion of flavours in the mouth.

World-renowned and awarded several times, this distillery has made a name for itself. “What this bottle of Réserve Ancestrale contains is incomparable: the oldest eaux-de-vie on the estate blended with dazzling mastery. On the nose and on the palate, an almost perfect balance between power and elegance, pure charm and exciting complexity.according to Figaro Magazine.
