Beer production in Belgium has decreased by 30% in March, compared to the same period in 2019. This was reported by the federation of Belgian brewers on Thursday. Indeed, many breweries have had to stop their activity totally or partially. This is due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus.
In addition, the closure of many breweries was a blow to the brewing industry. As a result, beer consumption fell by 60% between March 2019 and March 2020. Despite the fact that the figures in wholesale distribution progressed year by year. However, “they do not compensate at all for the decline in the sector,” says the general director of Brasseurs Belges, Nathalie Poissonier.
More generally, the federation notes a decline in receipts of 30% last month.
The federation fears that the situation will get worse. “It’s clear that April will be worse, since in March, the confinement only started in the second half of the month,” emphasizes the general director.
