Diageo to invest in two facilities for Guinness expansion

The British group Diageo will invest for Guinness 40 million pounds sterling in the expansion of the capacity of two beer packaging plants in the United Kingdom.

As part of the expansion of the Guinness packaging plants in Belfast, Ireland and Runcorn, England, the Diageo group will invest £40 million, split £29.2 million for Belfast and £16 million for Runcorn.

The Belfast depot will be transformed to double the site’s capacity with a new can line, with a capacity of 72,000 units per hour. At Runcorn, the transformation will be to modernize the bottling line and expand the storage area.

Diageo explains that in this way they are responding to the growth in sales of Guinness Draught and Guinness Zero beer. Work will commence as soon as possible to activate the planned service at both sites in 2023.

The Belfast unit employs 150 employees and serves Ireland, North America, Korea and Continental Europe, while Runcorn has 200 employees and produces cans, bottles and kegs for the UK and for export.

The British group’s portfolio includes brands such as Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, J&B, Smirnoff, Cîroc, Captain Morgan, Baileys and, of course, Guinness, among others. To date, it employs a total of 27,650 employees. The liquor group’s latest figures indicate a turnover of £12.7 billion in 2021.

It is worth noting that the group invested $110 million in two beverage can lines to support the development of ready-to-drink beverage sales.

They thus created 50 jobs in an area of 21,000 m². The factory has a capacity of more than 25 million cases (of 24 units on average): to support their sales of ready-to-drink beverages, malt-based beverages or cocktails. Equipped with two high-speed production lines, the plant is located in Lincolnway, Plainfield (Illinois), in the United States.
