Sotheby’s most expensive whisky auction to open this month

Scotch whisky from a private collection is expected to sell for around £4 million. “The Ultimate Whisky Collection” includes 349 lots, 467 bottles and nine casks.

Its owner, a private individual vendor, built his whisky collection with the help of whisky specialist Jonathan Read.

Among the most important distilleries to form his collection are Bowmore, Highland Park and The Macallan. In fact, the auction features a super special bottle of The Macallan 1926, Fine & Rare 60 years Old, from cask number 263. The latter is expected to sell for up to £450,000.

The collection’s online bidding will open on September 27 and end with a live auction on October 24, at Olympia in West Kensington, London, next to Sotheby’s auction of RM collectible cars.

Jamie Ritchie, president of Sotheby’s Wine, believes it will be seen as a historic auction in the spirits market. Also comparable to the first wine sales in New York in 1994 and Hong Kong in 2009. It is also an honor for Ritchie and Sotheby’s to present an auction of this magnitude.
