Africa: Cape Town has a new gin tour
If you like artisanal gin, go to Cape Town, a gin road has just opened.
According to Ella, general manager of Pepperclub Hotel & Spa, the road, which maps five gin distilleries within a 6-km radius, generated so much interest that the hotel then launched a tour in July, which includes a tasting experience in all five distilleries and the possibility of making its own gin.
Hope on Hopkins, which has been very popular since its creation in 2015, became the first establishment in the city to receive a distillation license. Since then, more than half a dozen micro-distilleries have opened their doors. Many of them turn to fynbos: a shrub located in the coastal plains and mountains of southern Cape Town to flavour their gin.
While just a stone’s throw from Hope on Hopkins, the Woodstock Gin Company’s flagship gin is impregnated with buchu: South Africa’s miracle herb.
Pienaar, also very well known, produces gins rich in flavours. His father Schalk, an engineer with more than 40 years’ experience in distillation technology, designed all the distillery’s equipment. Their oriental gin with Eastern spices has even influenced the entire Cape Town culture !
Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
