Breakthrough: Diageo creates 100% paper-based bottle of Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker, the whisky brand belonging to the drinks giant Diageo, intends to release its paper bottle in early 2021.

It would be the first bottle in the spirits industry to be 100% plastic-free and made from paper, fully recyclable. The bottle contains sustainable wood and pulp. This type of bottle will see the light of day in early 2021 with the Johnnie Walker brand, the number one Scotch whisky in the world.

This technology will allow brands to rethink their packaging designs and move them to paper, thus without compromising the existing quality of the product.

The container’s design can contain a variety of liquid products. It will form part of Diageo’s commitment to “Goal 12”, of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: “Responsible consumption and production”.

The bottle has been created through a partnership with Pilot Lite, an entrepreneurial company. Both companies are working on the Pulpex Limited project, a leading company in new sustainable packaging technology. Pulpex Limited seeks to develop in every area of day-to-day business. To this end, they have established a partnership with FMCG brands. These include Unilever and PepsiCo.

The brands in this consortium also hope to launch their own paper bottles in 2021 following the design and technology of Pulpex Limited.
