Discover the woman behind the Veuve-Clicquot champagne

The Veuve-Clicquot is real. Veuve, – as a widow in French – was the great lady of Champagne. Discover a bit of this story here.

In Saint-Brevin, at the beginning of March, in France, the Cinéjade, the local antenna of the permanent University, organized a conference. It was about the “Veuve Clicquot, Grande Dame du Champagne and extraordinary strategist“. The conference was animated by Michelle Brieuc, a member of the Society of People and Letters (SDGl Pars). And also of the Academy of arts, sciences and letters (Paris).

Her original name, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, with the original surname Ponsardin, was an unusual business woman. But when she became a widow at the age of 28, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin took over her husband’s business, and thus became the first woman to run a champagne house, since 1810.

She is an unforgettable pioneer. “Behind a house of Champagne, a vintage of exception, there is a story but above all an emblematic character: the great lady of Champagne“, says the antenna of Saint-Brevin.

Madame Clicquot was born in 1777 in Rheims. Daughter of Baron Nicolas Ponsardin, she received, due to the well-off social environment in which she grew up, a serious education, attached to the moral and traditional values of her time.

In 1798, she married François Clicquot, son of the founder of the House. François passed on to her all his passion and knowledge about champagne production and trade.
