Discovering the Manhattan cocktail: where does it come from and who created it?
The Manhattan is another of these classic cocktails whose creation is attributed to several people. Let’s take a look at the history of this cocktail.
Bourbon Whiskey, vermouth, bitters… it doesn’t take many ingredients to create the classic Manhattan. Apart from squeezing an orange peel and garnishing with a Maraschino cherry.
It is believed that the birth of the Manhattan goes back to the 1860s in the New York bar scene, although many other theories emerged about the origins.
One of them is that Jennie Churchill (Lady Randolph Churchill) hosted a party for New York gubernatorial candidate-elect Samuel J. Tilden. We are talking about 1874 and the party took place at the Manhattan Club. For the event, a bartender specially created a new cocktail which he called Manhattan, in honor of the place.
However, like many cocktails, the origin of the Manhattan was lost in time.
The first written mention of the cocktail dates back to September 1882, in an article in the New York Olean, the Sunday morning herald.
Two years later, the first written recipe for the Manhattan appeared in O.H. Byron’s book, The Modern Bartender’s Guide.
