The IPA French blue beer that’s all the rage right now is almost sold out!

This year 2022, it’s the blue beer that’s creating a bit of a stir among beer fanatics.

Hoppy Urban Brew (also known as HUB), based in the city of Roubaix, not far from the Belgian border, has partnered with a company called Etika Spirulina, which grows spirulina, a type of blue-green algae, which is then supplied to the brewery to give the beer its blue hue, Reuters reports. The hope is that the eye-catching drink – which gets its color from the compound phycocyanin – could also help Etika Spirulina promote its algae as a dietary supplement.

It’s arousing enormous interest and curiosity among the public,” Sebastien Verbeke, co-founder of the brewery, told the media outlet. HUB is reportedly already working on ramping up production after it sold out of 1,500 bottles of the 3% alcohol beer (which is called Line) in the last three months of 2021.

We started brewing our blue beer after meeting the Etika Spirulina team two years ago,” Verbeke told Food & Wine via email. “First it was kind of a challenge to have a blue pigment and not the green pigment you can have when you use raw spirulina.” But after several rounds of testing, the brewers finally hit on a recipe that achieved the color – and flavor – they were looking for. “Now we’re thinking of sharing our research with anyone interested [in duplicating] this experience, as long as they do it on a local scale,” he added.

Despite its blue color, the French blue beer comes across as a session IPA.

“It’s quite disconcerting,” explained HUB’s Mathilde Vanmansart while tasting the beer, “because being blue, our brain expects a certain note, but no, we really have here a session IPA, a very light beer, and the flavors of the beer really come through. We can taste that it has a light alcohol content with quite a bit of hop flavor, with light citrus notes. And in the back of the mouth, there’s a slight lychee flavor. It’s quite refreshing.”
