Limoncello is a delicious lemon-based liqueur created in southern Italy. Refreshing is typically tasted after meals as a digestive. In Italy almost every home finds its craft limoncello and each home has its own signature recipe.

To prepare it we need a high proof alcohol for spirit base. For example a vodka or Everclear. Then with this alcohol we macerate lemon peel and zests. Simple syrup and water are added to add balance in texture and flavor. Lemons are a very important part of Italian culture, in fact, Amalfi lemons are known for creating the best limoncello ever.

Homemade Limoncello Recipe

750 ml of vodka

12 lemons

2 cups of sugar

Optional: 10 – 15 basil leaves

Preparation

Peel the peels of the lemons into strips. Scrape the white part with a knife until only the peel is left. Add the peels to a two-quart vodka top. Let stand in the dark for three days.

On the third day, add sugar and 3 cups of water in a frying pan. Heat until the sugar dissolves. Add simple syrup to the lemon peel and vodka mixture. Put the jug back in a dark space and let it rest for two more days.

On the fifth day strain the liquid and throw away the lemon peels. For a different taste, you can blanch the basil for 5-10 seconds and add it to the jar one hour before straining.

Place the limoncello in jars in the fridge and let it rest for three days.

On the eighth day, your limoncello will be cold, ready and perfect to taste.

Salute!
