The Richard Hennessy bottle redesigned by Daniel Libeskind

For the new Richard Hennessy bottle, the Hennessy cognac brand partners with architect Daniel Libeskind.

The Richard Hennessy bottle takes on a new design thanks to the collaboration between Hennessy cognac and architect Daniel Libeskind. The decanter named after the founder of the brand was first unveiled in 1996 and celebrates as a tribute to 250 years of Hennessy’s history.

Inside is a cognac created with the rarest eaux-de-vie from Hennessy’s reserves, ranging in age from 40 to 50 years and up to 150 years old. For this reason, the quantities available are “extremely limited”, as only 12 French oak barrels are used each year to make this expression.

Tasting notes Richard Hennessy

Master blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde describes the liquid as having notes of orange peel and tobacco. On the palate we detect a spicy taste with notes of leather and dried fruits.

“It is the ultimate expression of pure quality and represents the entire history of Hennessy in a glass,” adds Fillioux de Gironde.

The expression has an alcohol content of 40%.

The creation of the Richard Hennessy bottle

For this edition of the Richard Hennessy cognac, they used Baccarat crystal, and Libeskind also designed accessories for the decanter such as glasses and a tray.

Libeskind drew on the founder’s “complex and intense” characteristics to create the design of the decanter, combining geometric crystalline shapes of Baccarat crystal with soft curves. The creative process for the new Richard Hennessy bottle took three to four years. They say, it symbolizes the future of the brand, while honoring the past.

“Cognac has a complexity, a process and a structure, just like architecture,” Libeskind said. “I’m inspired by the interplay between history and the future-when the two come together, a special magic happens.

“And I love bringing a myriad of ideas from different fields into the design process, because I think it elevates and brings new meaning to the design.”

This is the first time Libeskind has partnered with Hennessy. The Polish-born artist is known for the reconstruction of the World Trade Centre in Lower Manhattan, as well as projects such as the Jewish Museum in Berlin (Germany), the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Canada), Crystals at City Center (Las Vegas, USA) and the Zhang Zhidong Museum (Wuhan, China).

Richard Hennessy will be available in the UK at Harrods and Hedonism from mid-March, priced at £5,000 ($6,800).
