Without Brexit’s agreement, will French spirits be able to suffer when exporting ?

The United Kingdom is about to leave the European Union shortly – a process that is due to be completed in March 2019, after two years of complex negotiations between the country and the other 27 Member States.
The president of the FNSEA (Fédération nationale des syndicats d’exploitants agricoles) fears that a departure from Europe without an agreement would weigh on French exports.
“The sector most affected would be the wine and spirits sector, since we have a positive balance of €1.3 billion with the United Kingdom” said Christiane Lambert, President of the FNSEA, on Sunday 20 January. British Prime Minister Theresa May is due to present her plan B of the Brexit Agreement on Monday, after the House of Commons overwhelmingly rejected the agreement negotiated with Brussels.
And it’s not just spirits!
“The second victim would be dairy products, with a positive balance of €100 million. The apple sector would also be very affected – France is the leading supplier of apples to the United Kingdom – and then the vegetable and cereal sector”.
“We fear that these market losses will result in price collapses. Then there is the issue of standards. If the United Kingdom no longer applies the same standards, there may be distortions of competition,” fears Christiane Lambert. “The United Kingdom countries would be third countries, which would be able to decide on customs duties and therefore restrict imports. We fear it”.

Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
