King Charles’ Royal Martini
As we are approaching King Charles’ coronation later this week, it is always interesting to learn that he is just like us, holding a simple passion for a good daily Martini!
Called 50/50 (fifty-fifty), this cocktail made with gin and vermouth poured in equal parts, served with a twist of lemon instead of an olive, is a lower-alcohol variant of the famous Dry Martini popularized by James Bond. A gentleman’s drink, of course.
And his love for this cocktail certainly goes to great extents, it has become his pre-dinner routine; According to The Independent, Tina Brown, author of “The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor,” reports that King Charles has a ritual of sorts when it comes to his nightly beverage, noting that sometimes he attends dinners “with a ‘pre-mixed martini’ carried by his protection officer, which would be given to the butler and served in his own glass.”
Although we don’t question the reasons behind the King’s love for this particular cocktail, we can’t help but wonder if it is simply a matter of taste or a nod to his love of tradition and classic British culture!
