On December 29, 2020, the Official Gazette published the new specifications that will allow the exploitation of sugarcane in the new AOC zone and its transformation into AOC rum (appellation of origin).

Producers of Martinique rum and sugar cane will be able to increase their production. Through the classification, a total of 278 hectares will be added to the exploitable zone for this raw material, which is used to produce rum.

The ministerial order that allowed this change was obtained in record time. It authorized the revision of the AOC Martinique specifications. The new specifications were published on December 29, 2020 in the Official Gazette.

The measure came into force immediately as of January 2021 and the effects were immediate. From now on, 278 hectares of sugarcane are located within the perimeter of the AOC and may be processed into rum. On average, they represent 8 to 9,000 liters of pure alcohol and 15,000 liters of 55°C rum. The new surface area represents about 7% of the overall area.

Both rum and cane producers and the president of the AOC Martinique syndicate are delighted with this news. This measure, according to Marc Sassier, will not penalize planters.

If this decision had not been taken, producers would have had to wait one or two more years for validation of the modified specifications by the European Member States. This would have had the effect of penalizing them at a time when world demand for rum is growing.

The president believes that in the long term this decision will make it possible to offset the losses related to the restrictions on the use of phytosanitary products and herbicides on canes. Full of hope, Marc Sassier, president of the AOC Martinique union, hopes for an AOC Cannière campaign “under excellent auspices”.
