What is the secret to the best Old Fashioned? Besides bourbon, sugar, and bitters, there’s one other ingredient that will make your Old Fashioned the best it can be: ice! Since a single large ice cube has less surface area than a large number of small cubes, the ice will melt more slowly, preventing your drink from getting watered down too quickly. To finish the drink, we can add a maraschino cherry and orange zest, but feel free to omit them if you’re a purist.
- 1 cube of demerara sugar
- 2 teaspoons water
- 4 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 large ice cube
- 2 oz of bourbon
- Orange peel and maraschino cherry to serve
- In a rocks glass, stir together the demerara sugar, water and bitters until the sugar dissolves.
- Add an ice cube and pour the bourbon over it.
- Stir until cool.
- Garnish with an orange peel and a maraschino cherry.
Don’t drink and drive. Enjoy responsibly.
